Cuisine of Dalmatia

The Dalmatian cuisine is basically classic Mediterranean, which is mainly characterized by cooking methods such as steaming and grilling. The use of Peka is especially widespread here. It is an iron bell, under which everything from octopus to lamb can be cooked. Whether stuffed vine leaves or vegetables, whether cabbage or shellfish in the Buzara style, sardines or sausages grilled on skewers or pickled olives in brine there is much that is reminiscent of the Greeks and Ottomans. It is not surprise that the Greeks and Ottomans who once occupied the land left behind influences from their cultural and their culinary heritage. To our delight, the legacy of the Greeks and Ottomans makes it easy to come across desserts here from dried or candied fruits, walnuts, figs and almonds which are refined with honey and oriental spices at to the table. Even desserts like the caramel sweet, Rozata, or cakes with names like Mandolato and Arancina will make any mouth start to water. And not to forget: There are many interesting, traditional local specialties that can be found nowhere else, such as the famous pager goat cheese, typical local sausages or the Bura dried prosciutto. With the prospect of encountering new culinary delights, tourists should not miss doing a bit of island hopping in Dalmatia- an adventure full of fun!
