Cuisine of Istria

In Istria, specialties from the interior and typical coastal dishes are combined with culinary specialties from the peninsula near Italy, creating a very special mixture of tastes in the kitchen. Highlights of the rather heavy, Mediterranean and Italian influenced cuisine with lots of herbs includes, for example, the excellent mussels and oysters from the Lim channel, which can be prepared in 1001 different ways. They taste best when they are just freshly pulled from the sea or prepared in one of the many seafood restaurants that are in the Istrian tourist destinations, such as nearby Rovinj. A wonderful addition to the fresh seafood of the region includes Manestra (similar to Italian minestrone), the dishes reminiscent of Italian pasta and risotto dishes such as pljukanci and Fuzi, and the wonderful olives and olive oils of the region. In particular, culinary interested visitors don't want to miss out on the wonderful truffle dishes. The mountainous hinterlands of Istria are especially known for their high quality truffles. The terrific blend of all Istrian influences creates special dishes such as truffle risotto with grilled seafood.
