The Wine Country of Croatia

The Wine Country of Croatia

Speaking of wines: Did you know that the wine-making tradition in Croatia is already thousands of years old? While here, the Romans realized that the land offers ideal conditions for viticulture. These conditions can be found along the coasts and on the islands as well as along the major rivers and in the more continental climate hinterlands. Incredibly diverse describes the current Croatian wines that are appreciated all over the world - not only by connoisseurs. There are only a few regions where the aromatic vines are not found, otherwise the vineyards reflect the specific character of the surrounding landscape. A special breed of grape is, for example, only found on the coastal strip is the Plavac mali which is related to the Zinfandel and is grown almost exclusively in Dalmatia. Only here in the dry soil and plenty of the sun's heat can provide the ideal conditions for growing and maturing. From these grapes. the most famous wines of the country are pressed, the powerful Dingacfrom and Postup and the lighter, fruitier Peljesac, named after their growing regions. Moreover, Dalmatia is the region with by far the most viticulture areas where the grapes for  white and rosé wines come from. Apart from white varieties such as Posip, Viska Vugava and Zlahtina that are found here, there are also, of course, produces good red wines from the vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in all other coastal regions. Typical of the continental part of Croatia are white varieties such as the autochthonous Italian Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Traminer and Pinot Blanc. Among the red wines cultivated here, there are gentle and soft-developed wines from grape varieties such as Blue Portugal, Blaufrankischem, Blue Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
