Dvigrad

Retracing the footsteps towards the abandoned city of Dvigrad, will lead you through the Midwest of the Istrian Peninsula. The ruined city of Dvigrad lies inland between Porec and Rovinj. Today, the remains of this medieval settlement can be admired in the Draga Valley. The settlement of Dvigrad was first populated in ancient times by the Illyrians who built their houses on a hill. Which is why the city today is clearly visible from afar. In the Middle Ages, Dvigrad thrived socially and economically but was devastated in the 14th century through war and looting. After its complete destruction by the Venetians, Dvigrad was then once again rebuilt in the 15th century by those responsible for its destruction. More wars transpired, but the main reason for the exodus of inhabitants over the course of the 16th century were plague and malaria epidemics in particular. Only three families lived in Dvigrad for a few decades. In 1714, the town was completely abandoned and declined ever further. It did not take long before the first legends were being told the place. Among the legends is one about the buccaneer Sir Henry Morgan who is said to have buried some of his treasure in Dvigrad.

A tranquil place far from the crowds

Even today, this ancient, deserted city has a mystical atmosphere which, despite it being a town worth visiting, rarely attracts tourist. The overgrown ruins invite you to take a tour through the mysterious town whose castle is still well preserved. Meanwhile, the community is trying to preserve the ruins as a historical monument and redevelop some of the structures.

You can travel here from the village of Kanfanar, which can be easily reached via the motorways from all directions in Istria. Those who are ambitious enough can make the journey by bike or as part of a walking tour of the ruined city. Rovinj is around 20 kilometers away.
