Kap Kamenjak

This nature park forms part of Istria, as the name suggests, the southern tip of the Istria peninsula. Situated on a long peninsula extending far into the sea, this natural paradise has been a natural park since 1966. The peninsula inspires its guests with its wealth of rare plants and animals that make their home here in paradise. About 550 different plant species are found in the nature reserve part of Istria, including about 23 different protected species of orchids. This is a very special attraction. Due to its special vegetation, only parts of the park are accessible by car and all motorized vehicles must leave the park by least 21 o'clock. This measure is taken for the preservation of this unique natural landscape for Croatia's flora and fauna. The park is open daily from 7-21 o'clock for visitors.

Recreational Activities

Nevertheless, despite being a nature reserve, Kamenjak National Park is partly used for agriculture. Here delicious olives are grown for the best Croatian olive oil. There are also the native cattle, and especially sheep, that graze the salt grass pastures. Kamenjak is partly covered with pine forests, lush meadows and surprisingly, a variety of Mediterranean plants too. In addition, the park offers nature all along the coast for a length of approximately 30 kilometers. Here you can explore beautiful beaches and numerous hidden and unspoilt pebble and rocky beaches, which are ideal for swimming and surfing. The entire park is crisscrossed with mainly unpaved roads that are ideal for long walks and bike rides. Cliff divers can be seen diving from heights of between three and thirteen feet into the crystal clear sea near to the southern tip and the area around the popular, jungle-like overgrown Safari Bar.

Additional Tourist Attractions

Visitors can also enjoy a unique view of Istria from the southern tip and also see, among other things, the Porter Lighthouse on the southernmost part of the peninsula. From other vantage points, there are magnificent views of the islands of Cres and Lošinj, and the Ucka massif, especially if the weather is good. The former fishing village Premantura is right outside the entrance to the reserve and is now a popular holiday resort, not only for campers and surfers.
