The town of Knin is about a one hour drive away from Sibenik, in the interior, and is known for its medieval fortress. This fortress that was built in the 9th century is perched above the village on the Spas Mountain and can even be seen from a distance. From the fortress, you can keep a watchful eye on Knin's surrounding areas and, thereby, guard against enemies. This was particularly important, because many major regional roads crossed at this point, making the town very popular and sometimes it was fought over. In particular, in 1097, there were riots and a battle with the Hungarians under King Petar. Later, defensive battles against Turks and Venetians followed.

The exceptionally well-preserved Knin fortress is located about 350 meters above sea level and about 100 meters above the city. It is 470 meters long, 110 meters at its widest point and is divided into five parts: Donji Grad, Sredniji Grad, Gornji Grad, Kastel Knin and Juzni Grad. A defensive wall surrounds the area on all sides and provides the fortress with additional protection. Intruders would have to scale a 20 meter high wall to get into the fortress. With its large dimensions, the Knin fortress is among some of the largest defense facilities in Croatia and is the second largest military facility in Europe.

From March 16th to October 31st, visitors can enter the grounds of the fortress daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. In the off-season, the fortress is only open until 3:00 PM. The Museum of Knin is responsible for the fortress's preservation, which is also why there are some exhibitions. Visitors pay € 2.60 for entry and guided tours cost € 1.30. (as of 2015)
