Istrian Idyll at the water - surrounded by green slopes

Designated as "Croatia's most beautiful fjord", it is no wonder that the Lim Channel in the western part of Istria between the towns of Porec and Rovinj is so popular with vacationers. It is, strictly speaking, not a fjord, but a so-called Ria. Nevertheless, visitors take pleasure in the wonderful landscape that invites you to take walks, hikes and bike rides. Moreover, guests can explore this nature from a boat tour that heads down the about 500 meter wide channel. With a little luck you will get to see dolphins near the coast and just in case you don't, you can always take a peek at the fish and shellfish farms. They have conglomerated on the 11 kilometer long Lim Channel due to the prevailing low salt and high hydrogen content in the water. Accordingly, you can stop for a relaxing meal at one of the local fish restaurants.

Activities and sightseeing on the Limski Canal

A boat trip, which costs around 20 Euros per person, is a must for every vacationer visiting Istria. Regular excursions run from Pula, Rovinj or Porec to the Limski Channel. Those who prefer to spend the day ashore can enjoy one of the beautiful bays, whose wonderful water panoramas and the green slopes are sure to delight the eye. The nature at the Limski channel is so scenic that the Internet even circulated misinformation claiming that some scenes of the Karl May movie "Treasure of Silver Lake" were filmed here.
Especially the north side has a lot to offer landscape-wise. Due to the karst subsoil, there are some climbing spots and many caves. Particularly noteworthy is the pirate cave that is normally reached via tourist boats, but can also be reached over the land. Admission costs a few Euros. There are, unfortunately, refreshments only in the pirate bar and not in the channel itself. This is because bathing in the nature reserve around the Ria is strictly forbidden.

Useful information

Basically, a trip to the Lim Channel has no entrance fees. Some parking lots more inland, however, charge a fee. It is better to go by car or bicycle (for short distances) to the viewing platforms on the sea. They provide a wonderful view. Along the canal there are several souvenir stands, cafés and restaurants. The Vrsar Sporting Airport where you can book panoramic flights is also nearby.
