Pazin Cave and educational trail

While vacationing on the Istrian peninsula, tourists will have the chance to experience its impressive environment: On the way to the Pazin Grotto, you will have to cross a canyon formed by the Pazinčica River. Bordered by verdant cliffs, lush vegetation and an old-growth ambiance, tourists will reach the Pazin Grotto after taking the 1.3 kilometer trail through the canyon. This grotto is a special experience for both young and old visitors. The hiking and climbing route begins at the Vrsic Bridge near the fort, leads to the shore of the river and up to the "Piramida" viewing platform. The road ends at the Lovac Hotel. Trail signs have been put up along the way with information about the nature and the region in several languages. During the year, visitors can walk the trail from October to May and from June to September when it is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Entrance fees for adults cost around 4 Euros, 2 Euros for children. Due to the difficult terrain, this trail is not recommended for wheelchair users.

The famous Pazin Grotto lies around 100 meters below a castle. Researchers agree that the cave is one of the most impressive formations displaying karst landscapes: The Pazinčica River falls into a Ponor, a sinkhole, and runs underground until the water comes back to the surface at the Limski Channel. The bubbling creek, especially after heavy rains, is responsible for forming the Pazin Grotto, which was initially small. Over the years, the water has formed an approximately 80 meter by 20 meter large hall and the underground Martel's Lake, which is connected to the entrance of the Mitar Lake.

It is only possible to explore the cave with guides from the caving club "Istria" and the "Natura Histrica" establishment. Depending on the weather, the climb takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, is under professional guidance and provides the appropriate safety equipment. It is recommended to wear light, long-sleeved clothing and sturdy shoes while visiting. Per person, the descent costs about 25 Euros. A minimum of at least 3 people are required for a visit and the maximum number of people allowed is 15.
