Lopud

Northwest of the southern Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik is the Elaphiti Archipelago to which the Lopud Island and its 250 inhabitants belong. In the west, you will find the eponymous capital of this car-free, lush green island and the harbor here embedded in a large bay that protects boaters from the wind and the open sea.

In 1098 Lopud was, according to tradition, "discovered" by the Milan sailor Ottotone Visconti, who was saved when he shipwrecked on the island. Since he did fulfill his promise to build 100 houses of worship, we now see a large number of churches, chapels and memorial stones on Lopud. Over the centuries, many wealthy sailors and captains began to settle here to protect themselves against the advancing Turks. Lopud gets its nickname, the "Captain Island" because of this. When the danger was over, the inhabitants built country castles, monasteries, palaces and a shipyard where, during its heyday in the 15th century, was responsible for building over 80 ships. Mount Polacica is scenic and interesting and from its summit you can enjoy beautiful views right next to religious buildings – such as the highest lying Church of Gospa od Sunja with its family coat of arms from Visconti of Milan - and the Spanjola Fortress which attract many visitors.

In addition to its historical heritage, Lopud is also known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Lopud, along with two of the other major Elaphiti islands, is one of the most visited islands from tourists traveling from Dubrovnik on a half or full day boat trip. That is why you will find a diverse selection of cuisine and several leisure activities available here (including a bicycle and scooter rental, sailing excursions, theater and music festivals).
