Mali Lošinj

In the Kvarner Bay, protected by a deeply cut bay in the southwest of the Losinj Island lies the town of Mali Losinj. The name Mali Losinj translates to small-Losinj, and yet Mali Losinj is the capital of the isle, which has about 6,000 residents - and at the same time is the largest town on the island of Losinj. The center of the town was and is the harbor, which is considered by sailors and boaters an extremely safe harbor due to its location deep in the Bay of Augustus. Due to its port, Mali Losinj has been an important place for maritime trade and shipping since the 19th century. Even today the city's harbor and the marina located a little to the north characterize the lifestyle in Mali Losinj, despite the rising importance of tourism: a change from trading.

Numerous vacationers start at the Mali Losinj Marina for their day trips to the surrounding islands in the Kvarner bay, such as Cres and Krk. They also cross through the beautiful Adriatic Sea to the south islands of Dugi Otok and Kornati. The harbor and the marina can be reached through the narrow Privlaka-channel which lies in the northeast region of Mali Losinj and connects the two parts of the island by a bridge. In the ports of Mali Losinj, there are a total of 200 berths for boats and yachts, a gas station, boat rentals, diving schools and water sport providers.

It is clear that the harbor is the center of daily events which can be seen in the numerous restaurants, cafés and taverns that have been established here. From morning to night locals and tourists alike enjoy the local cuisine, refreshing drinks or one of the local liqueurs- and all with a wonderful view of the Mali Losinj Bay. Those with a taste for culinary specialties will find many meat and fish dishes, which are refined with regionally grown vegetables and fresh herbs - typical Croatian cuisine.

Culture history buffs will love checking out the sights here- including its ecclesiastical buildings, which are particularly visit-worthy. To the east of the town there is the Church of St Martin, which was built in 1450 and is located at the present cemetery of Mali Losinj. It is the oldest building in the city and tells the history of the town, which is partly written in Glagolitic inscriptions. Also impressive is the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, surrounded by a large piazza, dating back to the years from1696-1775. The three-nave church not only houses the relics of St. Romulus, but it simultaneously forms the historical center of Mali Losinj. Culture and movement can be combined with a tour of the so-called stations of the cross, which starts south of the village and comprises a total of 14 stations. The stations are small chapels from the 18th century. A truly marvelous way to learn history in idyllic nature! More scenic idyll is found in the northwestern lying Cikat Forest that extends over the western coast of the bay. Here you can experience the pristine nature of Mali Losinj on the beautiful biking and hiking trails or swim at one of the beautiful beaches.
