Umag

The small town of Umag in Istria is among the most popular destinations for holidays in Croatia. Umag has not quite 5,000 residents who subsist not only from tourism, but also from the vineyards and olive groves. During the high season, there are a lot more people populating Umag's romantic alleys and extensive beaches. In combination with the sun, the soil of the region is very fertile, which produces wonderful wines. Thus, visitors to the city will have a large gastronomic selection of the delights of the region. In addition to the already mentioned wine, the local cuisine consists of mainly fresh fish and all kinds of seafood from the Adriatic Sea.


Attractions in Umag

Umag is situated a few kilometers from the Croatian-Slovenian border in the region Buje and is at the same time the northernmost coastal community in Croatia. Reaching Umag is best done by car. Also possible is traveling by air via the airports of Trieste and Pula as well as with the train via Trieste. Umag's picturesque old town is on a peninsula jutting out into the sea. Once an island which was connected via a drawbridge to the mainland, it has many historic buildings, including some dating back to the 10th century. For example, its still partially preserved fortress walls, the gate and the drawbridge. Particularly interesting are the Church of St. Rochus which was originally built in the 16th century, the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary Assumption and St. Peregrinian church. Umag impresses its visitors not only with its Venetian heritage felt in every step through the city, but also with its wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere that the city has preserved in its whole aura. In Umag the Mega Event "Spring Break Europe" has happened here for the last few years. Some kilometers further to the north, is the town of  Savudrija where the oldest lighthouse in Istria is located. Also worth seeing here are, incidentally, the wooden frames used to "suspended" fishing boats, which is a curious characteristic of the region around Umag.


Excursions to the Surrounding Areas

In Umag it is definitely not boring. Its nearby areas lure both athletic enthusiasts as well as nature lovers to its attractions. About 13 kilometers from Umag is the adorable town of Novigrad. Particularly worth seeing are the parish Church of the Holy Virgin Mary Assumption and the bell tower of St. Pelegrin. Culturally interested visitors can also visit the Galerja Rigo Art Museum, the privately run Gallerion War Museum where you can see the works from the photographer Sergio Gobbo and the Lapidary Museum. About 27 kilometers from Umag is the typical Istrian village of Motovun sitting on the hilltop, which came to life during the medieval period- it is perfect for a day trip. The surrounding forests and the village vineyards are ideal for long walks, hikes, or bike rides. In the south of Istria is Pula, the Istrian capital, where the impressive amphitheater built under the Roman Emperor Augustus is located. Moreover, visitors can visit the equally remarkable Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii. Pula is also home to the Archaeological Museum of Istria. On the West Coast lies Rovinj which has numerous other archaeological and architectural sites as well as some museums. For families with children, the aquarium is especially interesting.


Other Excursions Around Umag

About 37 kilometers from Umag and very easily reached by car is the Lim channel, where you can take delight in a beautiful natural setting. This wonderful fjord extends about nine kilometers into the land and is ideal for an extended cruise. The stalactite Baredine cave near the town of Porec is definitely worth a visit. Other natural wonders can be experienced in the Brjuni National Park by nature lovers and hikers. Families with children are mainly attracted to the Istralandia Waterpark and the Dino Park in Vrsar.
