Stoncica is ideal for families with small children as the sea is very shallow and therefore also suitable for non-swimmers. The beach also has many shady stops due to its dense Mediterranean vegetation and allows for recovery and protection from the bright sun. A very idyllic location is the Zaglav Milna beach, which has a secluded location despite still being only a 10-minute walk from Milna. Those looking for peace and solitude have found the right place. However, it must be noted that the above mentioned beaches are just examples of the many hidden coves on Vis- an ideal island for a holiday away from stress and everyday life.

Villages on Vis

In addition to beautiful beaches, there are also other places to discover on Vis. The two main cities, Vis and the city of Komiza have more than enough cozy accommodations and hotels, as well as restaurants, bars and other facilities. Visitors can taste here the delicious traditional dishes of freshly caught fish and lobster, which have been prepared in the same way for centuries. These delicacies taste even better with a glass of local wine, Vugava. Vis town is located in the north of the island and is the result of an originally Greek colony. Komiza city is located in the southwest. The only sources of fresh water on the island are, by the way, only found around Komiza. Komiza is connected to Vis town by ferry, but also by road. For a long time Vis's military area was inaccessible for foreigners. In 1944 the partisan General Tito had his general staff here and these so-called “Tito's caves” where Tito stayed, can still be seen today. The restricted zone was removed, of course, with the fall of Yugoslavia.

How to get there

The 60 kilometers from the Dalmatian mainland to the remote island of Vis can be done very smoothly throughout the year by ferry. Essential for island residents and visitors alike is the car ferry company of Jadrolinija. Route 602 connects the main town of Vis directly with the port city of Split on the mainland. In the high season between late June and late September, the ferry runs twice every Tuesday, and otherwise three times a day. Basically, the ship sails two times per day from May 30th to June 26th and from September 1st to September 28th. The two-hour long crossing gives the passenger much time to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the wonderful dreamworld before the Dalmatian coast. Those wishing to reach their destination of Vis rather quickly and are willing to pay a higher fare, can also take the Kapetan Luka/Krilo catamaran route number 9602. This ship connects Vis with Hvar and Split  once per day and needs only about 1 hour and 25 minutes for the whole trip. Note the different departure times, depending on the day of week and the season. There is a disadvantage of the catamaran: Cars can not be transported. Its great advantage, on the other hand, is its speed: The visitor-friendly schedules allow guests to make it to Hvar from Vis for an excursion and back in one day.
