Dubrovnik Old Town

Not only has Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, been a popular destination for crusaders and Jet setters, but also has a varied and fascinating history making it's bustling port-side old city in the south of Croatia a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1979.  Despite a major earthquake that damaged much of the city in 1667 and also the damage done during the Croatian War of Independence, the city has still been able to preserve its unique completeness and beauty in an impressive manner.

Framed by a majestic, fully accessible city wall, the old town becomes an urban unit characterized by narrow streets, lively squares, and the city harbor with its main Stradun promenade. It has also is characterized by such interesting buildings as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary which has a Baroque basilica from the 13th Century.  It doesn't matter if you are looking at a single building, such as the oldest pharmacy in Europe, the Franciscan monastery from the 14th Century or the Prince's Palace, the fascination that Dubrovnik has to offer is endless. It is the overall, spectacular combination of churches and monasteries, palaces and fountains from different centuries which makes this city worth seeing and preserving.
