Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian

Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian

Split is seen as the unofficial capital city of Dalmatia which is not surprising for this port city. Its turbulent history has made it one of the most exciting and remarkable places in the country.  Since 1979, the entire city has been under UNESCO protection. Under these conditions, the World Heritage title encompasses Diocletian`s Palace and the medieval extensions of the city. The late antique Imperial Palace alone attracts millions of visitors- and rightly so! Hardly any other city in the world offers the opportunity to stroll through such a well- preserved complex direct in the middle of the city, where you can marvel at the perfect combination of early Christian, Byzantine and early medieval art. Here, between imperial quarters, official reception halls and mighty vaults you can easily loose yourself and be wonderfully immersed in the splendid and varied history of the city and the country.

The original palace stretched over an area of nearly 30,000 square meters and had a rectangular floor plan of 180x215 meters, which was all surrounded by thick, towering walls. Today, where inviting cafés now stand and where tour guides guide you through the architecture and art works, there once resided the only Roman emperor who voluntarily resigned from his position. For those searching for a bit of peace amongst the splendid, powerful, well- preserved walls can explore the Ethnographic museum. This museum is located along with the Venetian town loggia on the “Narodni Trg” square, which is found adjoined to the western medieval city center. The many small cafés and restaurants entice one to linger. In the center of Diocletian's Palace is the peristyle, which can be described, as well as with the Sveti Duje Cathedral, as providing the best views of the city from the church tower. The most popular meeting place in Split is along the Riva. Riva is a long, wandering promenade along the harbor bay and is still protected under the UNESCO old town.
