Historical Core of Trogir

A very special place worth seeing is the port city of Trogir near Split in Dalmatia. The complete old town, which is under UNESCO protection, is on a small island. This small island has 2 bridges connecting it to both the mainland and the neighboring island of Ciovo. Although almost completely destroyed and leveled in the 12th Century by the Saracens, this former Greek settlement now serves as a prime example of the continuity of a city and has been therefore, since 1997, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The historical city center is partly surrounded by a wall and has even to this day its checkerboard street grid from the Hellenistic period. There are also many carefully restored and well-preserved architectural masterpieces from different time periods. Houses and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance invite you to explore and marvel at their grandeur, such as the Prince's Palace from the 13th Century, the town's impressive loggia and the greater and smaller Cipiko Palace from the 15th Century.  Romanesque churches are impressive in both their architecture and facilities alike, including the St. Lawrence Cathedral which dates back to the 13th Century. It is considered a significant example of Romanesque-Gothic art in Croatia and stills astonishes people to this day with its opulently styled western portal designed by the master Radovan.
