St. Jacob’s Cathedral in Šibenik

St. Jacob’s Cathedral in Šibenik

Sibenik is a charming harbor town near the Krka estuary in northern Dalmatia and has only just recently become a UNESCO Heritage Site. The Cathedral of St. James has been under the special protection of this organization since 2000.  It is considered a unique piece of religious architecture because of how this masterpiece, among other things, combines its influences from Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany in an inimitable and aesthetic way. On the south side of the town square, this cathedral dominates this city's face with its monumental size and its grandeur. The majestic building, despite it large size, has a very harmonious feel to it which can be accredited to the genius of its three architects, Francesco di Giacomo, Juraj Dalmatinac and Nikola Firentinac.

From its foundations to its nave to its finely constructed dome, there is a unique harmony that pulses through the building making it an aesthetic masterpiece. The Renaissance influence combines clarity with perfect form, which is found mimicked in Bauhaus designs in the modern era.  These buildings are impressed with timeless elegance and beauty.
