About 100 Miles of Istria

In 2015, the endurance race “100 Miles of Istria” will take place on the northwest lying peninsula for the third time. Similar to last year, the athletic participants must cross the entire peninsula during the race that starts in Labin in the east and finishes in Umag in the northwest. All in all, the runner must cover 173 kilometers, which includes having to be able to overcome 7002 meters of ascent and 7016 meters of descent. Last year, around 496 runners made it from Labin to Umag. These runners have traveled to Istria from over 22 different countries in order to compete with themselves and other athletes. In the meanwhile, this endurance race is regarded as the unofficial qualifying race for the Trail World Cup in Mont Blanc, France.

The event is arranged to take place in the second half of April (April 17 to 19 in 2015), which not only provides the ideal climatic conditions for the runners, but also attracts tourists. The 173 kilometer route is not for the inexperienced athlete, especially since the organizers specify a time limit of 48 hours. Those who are not yet able to accept this challenge can participate in the shorter races that take place at the same time. Interested athletes can choose routes from 65 to 110 kilometers with a time limit of 16 or 33 hours. A few days before the “100 Miles of Istria” race there is a mini-event with a 1-kilometer run. The race starts at noon in Umag and even children and adolescents can join in on the athletics. To participate in the “100 Miles of Istria” race, you will have to pay 114 euros. Registration for the race is only possible until March 15, 2015, as long as the number of participants does not exceed 300 runners.

To have acquired, before to the race, a real understanding of personal autonomy in the mountains/terrain allowing for the management of potential problems encountered during this type of event, notably:

  • Ability to confront, without outside assistance, changing climatic conditions which could be very difficult to deal with at altitude (night, wind, cold, fog, rain or snow).

  • Ability to manage, including when one is isolated, physical or mental problems arising from a heavy fatigue, digestive problems, muscle or articular/joint pains, small wounds, etc…

  • Aware that the organization’s role is not to help a runner manage these problems.

  • Aware that for such an activity in the mountains, safety depends upon the runner’s ability to adapt to the problems encountered or foreseen.

  • To inform and educate the runner’s supporters towards the respect of nature, people, and the regulations of the race.
