Dubrovnik’s famous local mountain, Srd, or Sergius Mountain, is located right on the Dalmatian coast in the south of Croatia. The 400-meter-high hill is popular with tourists, especially because of its unforgettable view of Dubrovnik and the beautiful surroundings. A climb up the local mountain, Srd, is a highly recommended excursion for travelers, because the breathtaking panoramic view from above over the historic roofs of the city is simply indescribable. Watch how tradition meets modernity and a brilliant picture emerges of a city that was reborn and rose like a phoenix from the ashes after bitter wars in the early 1990s.
The cable car leading up to the top and the summit cross, a gift from Napoleon, were also unfortunately completely destroyed during the war. Fortunately, both the cable car and the ruined summit cross were faithfully rebuilt and reopened in 2010 after a break of almost 20 years. Since then, the summit cross has been a wonderful sight in the evenings, as the watchful symbol above Dubrovnik is artistically illuminated with spotlights every night.
The cable car ride and the view leave a lasting impression!
The cable car is the easiest and most comfortable way from the old town to the top of Srd at a height of over 400m. During the four-minute ride, you can sit back and relax and enjoy the picturesque view of the red brick sea of Dubrovnik’s closely-spaced houses. The entrance is very close to the Ploce city gate at the north-eastern end of the old town. Once you reach the top, a souvenir shop with an attached restaurant-café awaits you, which has a panoramic window with a wonderful view of the sea. The mountain station also offers several viewing terraces, some of which are part of the catering establishment, and all offer a magnificent panoramic view from Cavtat in the east to the Elaphite Islands in the west.
The spectacular view of Dubrovnik’s sea of houses and the small island of Lokrum just below is indescribable! Here you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking landscape with a latte macchiato and a piece of delicious cake or a glass of wine and a tasty lunch or dinner. Anyone interested in the city’s eventful history can also visit the War Museum on the summit. An impressive collection of weapons, maps and photographs in the ruins of Fort Imperial provide information about the devastating Yugoslavian war from 1991 to 1995.
Prices, travel times and further details
The “Dubrovnik Cable Car” can transport up to 30 people at a time to the top of the Srd. The cable car covers a total distance of almost 800m, for which, impressively, only a single cable car support (pylon) is required near the mountain station. The cable car, including the mountain and valley stations, is designed to be handicapped accessible and is operated all year round. In June, July and August the gondolas even run at short intervals from 9 a.m. to midnight. You pay just 60.00 kn, the equivalent of around €8.00, for a single ticket and 108.00 kn, around €14.00, for an ascent and descent. Children aged 4-12 pay 50 or 30 kn. Smaller children travel for free. Tickets can currently only be purchased at the valley station and not online (as of 2015).
