Since 1965, the southeastern part of Mljet Island was declared the important Saplunara landscape protection area and helped preserve the untouched nature with endemic plants and native pine forests. At the beginning of the 1960s, the northwestern part of Mljet Island was declared Mljet National Park, with its two salt lakes and the Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary, located on an island in a large lake. The entire island of Mljet offers modern nomads from urban environments peace, relaxation, and true tranquillity as a unique green oasis in the Adriatic.
