Drvenik
Gornja Vala is located in the southern Bay of Drvenik and is, similar to Donja Vala, characterized by modern houses and holiday cottages. There is a small harbor which forms the center of the district. Both settlements are connected by the "Adriatic Highway" coastal road and by the around 2 km long waterfront promenade.
The inhabitants of Drvenik lived above the coast along the once densely forested slopes of the Biokovo until 1962. The town got its name from its former location, seeing that "drvo" means wood in the Croatian language. However, an earthquake destroyed the old mountain village and its associated rural charm. Due to the massive destruction of the town, the locals moved to the coast and rebuilt there. Thanks to the beautiful coastline with many small idyllic bays, interesting ferry connections, and the Biokovo Mountains, a seaside vacation here in Drvenik consists of a variety of excursions, hiking and climbing.
