Goveđari

Lying above the salt-water "Veliko Jezero" Lake, nestled in a hilly landscape in Mljet National Park, is the village of Govedari. The area which surrounds the 253 meter high Mount Montokuc has been cultivated by the Benedictine monks for a long time now. Their monastery can still be seen today on the Islet of Sveta Marija that borders the salt water "Veliko Jezero" Lake. The monks first allowed this fertile area to be settled in the 18th century, which is why the first farmers and cattle herders coming to Govedari had to move towards the inland of the island. The latter group of settlers gave the picturesque village its name: "Govedo" means cattle.

If you take the hiking trail leading towards Babine Kuce, along the shores of the great lake, you will pass the small Church of St. Nicholas dating back to the 20th century and having two small bells in the tower. In addition to the Benedictine Monastery, it is one of the few attractions in this just under 180 inhabitant-large village.

Since the stone houses of the residents still retain their original charm, a tour of Govedari through the cobbled stone alleys and wildy overgrown stairs is worthwhile. This is despite there being no outstanding historical monuments to visit. On Veliko jezero there is a restaurant that is easily accessible from Govedari. More gastronomy and leisure activities can be found in the tourist center of the island: the town of Pomena lying 2 km away.
