Kaštel Štafilić

Kastel Stafilic, home to a total of 3,000 inhabitants, is a district in the city of Kastela and lies only a few kilometers from the central Dalmatian city of Trogir and the Split airport. The district was named after a fortress which was built by Stjepan Stafileo from Trogir. In 1508, the Greek-born nobleman supervised the building of the fort and the tower, "Rotondo", on the coast. The fortress back then resisted the attacks of the Turks and now the fortress has another job: to "fight back" and prevent natural disasters such as floods. That the fort has not been badly damaged, can be attested to by the fact that the locals built three churches in 1566, 1670 and 1765 inside the fortress walls for "protection".

Another attraction in the district of Kastel Stafilic is the "Nehaj" Fortress, whose construction was first started in 1548 by the brothers Ljudevit and Ivan Lodi. Upon their death, only the first floor had been completed. Their daughters and sons-in-law had no interest in continuing with the project and the tower remained, therefore, unfinished. A natural tourist attraction in Kastel Stafilic concerns an olive tree thought to be over 1,500 years old. The district has retained much of its original charm because of the many historic buildings still standing today. The surrounding countryside is quite industrial, due to the Split airport and the arable land.
