Povljana
The town of Povljana lies where the Kvarner Bay and Dalmatia connect in the southwest region of the island of Pag. The community already existed during Roman times, of which archaeological excavations in Stara Povljane can testify to. At that time the inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture and fishing. Today, the town of approximately 750 inhabitants has turned to tourism. Nevertheless, it still attaches great importance to its regional products available in the shops and restaurants. A specialty is its Gegic wine, which is grown in Povljane.
Near the coast sits the old Croatian church of St. Nicholas. It was built in the 10th century together with a small cemetery. A few kilometers inland, surrounded by fields is the Church of St. Martin: a sacred building dating back to the 14th century. If you want to see more historic buildings, it is worth it to take a trip to Pag 13 km away, or to Zadar on the mainland.
Impressive nature can be experienced in the Veliko Blato Bird Reserve and the adjacent freshwater lake f Malo Balto in northeastern Povljane. In the picturesque nature there are beautiful trails just waiting to be explored on foot or by bicycle. With its small islands, Malo Balto is a unique lake.
