Sveti Juraj

Ten kilometers south of Senj is the large fishing village of Sveti Juraj with 960 inhabitants, which extends over small bays on the southeast coast of the Kvarner Bay. The panorama in the direction of the Adriatic Sea is dominated by the island of Krk and the small island Prvic and the massive Velebit Mountains dominate the view towards the mainland. At the foothills of the Velebit, around which Sveti Juraj has formed, you can feel the somewhat strong Bora wind that mingles with the mild Mediterranean temperatures to produce a unique climate.

The scenic blend of the Velebit and the Adriatic Sea offers visitors a variety of leisure facilities: including swimming, diving, hiking, climbing, cycling. The village was named after the Benedictine monastery "Sveti Juraj" erected in the 12th century, which was then abandoned in the 19th century. Its very near neighbor built in the 14th century is the Church of Sveti Filip i Jakov (Sainta Phillip and Jacob) which can still be visited today. It is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the region. Definitely worth seeing are the remains of the prehistoric settlement of Lopsice above Sveti Juraj. During the attacks of the Turks in the 16th century, the settlement was abandoned and was left largely uninhabited. Culinary traditions can be tasted, especially the fish and shrimp dishes, in the local restaurants. The inhabitants of Sveti Juraj have been known to fish for scampi for generations.
