Prvić Island
The only 2.37 kilometer ² island of Prvic is located very closely to the mainland, directly opposite the popular Vodice resort - the two coast lines are only about half a mile away from each other. This most fertile island was already inhabited in the early Middle Ages, as many people fled here to escape the conflicts of their time. During the Turkish wars, mainly patrician families fled from Sibenik to here. A special feature of Prvic is due to the fact - as opposed to the other islands of the archipelago – that it is not a limestone island, but consists of dolomite.
Sites and Attractions
Firstly, the present-day capital of Luka was founded. Luka is located on the bay on the southeast side of the island. Particularly noteworthy here is the Church of St. Mary with its convent. Luka is also the birthplace of the scientist and scholar Faust Vrancic, the inventor of the parachute. In the southwestern area, there is Sepurine, the second touristic village of this quite interesting little island. In Sepurine the Rochus Church completed in 1620 and the late 19th century parish Church of the Virgin Mary Assumption heartily await a visit. Prvic has such a great affect on many visitors due to its beautiful, sunny beaches, fragrant Mediterranean pine trees and its legendary tranquility. Thus, it is extremely attractive as a Croatian holiday destination away from the touristy beaten path. The people living here have subsisted for decades from viticulture and livestock and only in the last years has tourism become increasingly important. A very popular event is the entertainment and sports event "Bodulska pripetavanja", a festival in which Prvic's residents firstly compete in a locally popular sport and then celebrate merrily until the wee hours of the morning. The highlight of this competition, in this case, is a game of tug of war.
Excursions
Prvic is an ideal starting point for excursions to the surrounding islands. For boaters it is very popular, as the well as the neighboring, well-known coral island island of Zlarin. The nearby island of Krapanj is the smallest and most densely populated island of the Sibenik archipelago. Guests are especially fascinated here by the residents who still practice the old tradition of sponge diving. Wonderful hiking and relaxing can be done on the two islands of Tijasnica and Zmanj.-
