Novigrad

The parish Church of St. Pelagius, one of the most recognizable structures in Novigrad, was built between the mid-5th and the mid-8th century. This church with its church tower and a three-aisled basilica was the cathedral of the diocese of the city until 1828. Especially worth seeing inside is the Baroque altar and the choir rose, revealing a three-aisled crypt with vaulted ceiling - unique in Istria and one of the few in the entire country.

In Novigrad, there are other beautiful churches to visit, such as the St. Agatha's Church, Church of the Holy Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Anton's Church. The mainly stannic reinforced ramparts of Novigrad were probably built in the 13th century directly on the ruins of a late antique fortress. Today, it encompasses almost the entire peninsula. The masonry consists of two round towers from the Renaissance and a square stone pillar at the former city gate. In the 16th century, the Loggia named Belveder was built directly on top of the ruins of a tower or on a old fortress and has a direct view of the sea. Opposite this building in the west, there is a vaulted passage leading to the water. This Porta a Marina was carved in the 17th century from stone.

In Novigrad, there are also numerous museums: In the lapidary there are about a hundred stone monuments to see, the Gallerion is a private war museum exhibiting dealing with the Austria-Hungarian fleet of the Imperial and Royal Navy, In the Rigo City Palace, which was brought into existence by a local noble family in the 18th century, displays modern and contemporary art.

There are four large and well maintained beaches within the vicinity of the coastal town of Novigrad. All four of these have been awarded the "Blue Flag" for excellent water quality, cleanliness and for their services provided. These beaches are popular with swimmers and, after all, they provide sanitary facilities, dining facilities and various sports facilities within its immediate vicinity. Those seeking peace and solitude, will surely find themselves more at ease in the more remote sections of the Novigrad coast. The indented coastline is thickly covered with lush, fragrant pine trees and going a few kilometers inland, the landscape is characterized by the fertile olive plantations and vineyards.

On a holiday in Croatia in the region of Istria there are many possibilities to make many beautiful excursions to the surrounding areas. For example, the stalactite Baredine cave southeast of the city, which was declared in 1986 as a geomorphological natural monument. Or a visit to the Lim channel, a narrow inlet on the west coast of Istria near to the grotto of St. Romualdo of Ravenna, is recommended. Worth a visit is also the Brijuni National Park, 14 small islands off the coast of Istria, where access to the public is only available on the largest, Veli Brijuni. In the park, there is a beautiful, spacious animal enclosure which you can stroll through. Fun for the young and old can be had at the Aqua Park Istralandia with its many pools and water slides. In addition, other cities can be reached from Novigrad, such as the cities of Pula, the picturesque Rovinj, the tranquil Umag, and the medieval Motovun.
