Pirovac
Pirovac is a coastal town, which has been shaped, like so many places in Croatia, by a turbulent and painful past, mainly characterized by viscous resistance struggles against foreign invaders. In the 15th century refugees arrived in the region and laid the foundation for today's Pirovac. This story is proved today by the remains of numerous buildings - including fortress walls from the 16th century that still protect the city from all directions. The Romans were the first to settle the area, which has been confirmed by remains found from the former settlement and findings on the island of Sveti Stipan lying before Pirovac. On this uninhabited island, called "Mojster" by the inhabitants, there is a unique romantic atmosphere- which is why it is also called the Island of Love. On the island, you can visit the ruins of a Franciscan Monastery, which has been empty since the 19th century.
In addition to these legacies of earlier inhabitants, there are other interesting cultural and historical heritages in the old town. For example, the city gate, which was closed in former times by a draw bridge in the evenings. The parish Church of Sveti Juraj from the 15th century is considered a symbol of the village. In the 18th century it was adapted into the Baroque style.
The summer months in Pirovac become especially lively when the inhabitants organize their traditional festivals. The residents present their traditions and tell the history of their town at events including, among others, the "Pirovac Night", the singing competition of "Prvi Glas" as well as at religious festivals in honor of Sveti Juraj, the patron saint of the town.
Pirovac is a tourist resort with good infrastructure and therefore offers its visitors a comprehensive selection of cafés, bars and restaurants with local cuisine, much leisure at the beach and plenty of opportunities for cycling, walking or sailing in the surrounding areas. The well-built waterfront promenade is the perfect place for a lovely evening stroll along the gently back and forth rocking boats with beautiful views of the old town.
