Slatine

Situated in the northwest region of the the popular island of Ciovo is the village of Slatine facing the mainland near Split. The village's name come from the Croatian word for source - "Slatina". In the past, there were supposedly healing freshwater springs around Slatine that initially attracted cholera sufferers and later health-conscious tourists. Today, many of the 1,200 locals in Slatine have a weekend house here where they can hide out after fleeing to the isle from the larger mainland towns of Trogir and Split. In the summer, there are additionally many tourists who frolic to this village because of the many beaches and coves in Slatine. The town is characterized around the coast by new buildings, but the historic center is located in the hilly country.

Definitely worthwhile is a climb to the Sanctuary Gospe od Prizidnica, which was built directly into the cliffs in 1546. The altar is made of marble and almond wood and displays a painting of the Holy Virgin Mary. From the lower district, there is a trail leading up to the church, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view to Split. Back down in the village you will find several restaurants and shopping- Slatine leaves nothing to be desired during a holiday here.
