Veli Lošinj
Most of the inhabitants subsist from fishing; a trade many locals still persist today. Ever since Veli Losinj was recognized in 1885 as a health resort, it has displayed a long tradition in tourism. A majority of the vacationers appreciate the mild climate which has a soothing effect on the body, especially against allergies and chronic diseases, as well as the beautiful beaches which extend around the south of Veli Losinj. The early development of Veli Losinj as a tourist destination was in part due to its highly important position as a navigation site. Not only did many sailors and captains come from Veli Losinj, but it was also one of the central stops for the steamship line between Trieste, Rijeka and Pula. It is therefore not surprising that the port is the vibrant center of Veli Losinj. Numerous restaurants, cafés and bars have been established here where locals and tourists enjoy the warm summer evenings. Narrow streets leading to the upper town will take you to where the original settlement of Velo selo was- from whence Veli Losinj developed. The streets of the old town are characterized by its high stone walls and rustic houses: a typical Mediterranean image with original flair.
This town can even boast several cultural characteristics. This includes the Church of Sveti Antun in particular. Dating back to the 17th century, this church was first built in the Gothic style and later rebuilt with baroque elements. Inside it houses impressive features and major works of art. Here, you can visit a total of seven Baroque altars and more than 30 paintings by Venetian artists - including the "Madonna with Saints" (1475) by Bartolomeo Vivarini. The remarkable round "Kula" tower can be seen at the entrance to the bay, opposite the harbor. Its construction was authorized in the 15th century to protect against pirates. Today it houses a gallery and a museum. The three-aisled Church of our Lady of the Angels has a valuable interior made of marvelous marble.
Many visitors are especially attracted by a very special project of the city: North of the harbor is a protected area for dolphins. The organization provides extensive insights into the lifestyle of the dolphins in the Mediterranean. In addition, there are a number of impressive villas dating back to the Hapsburg monarchy. There are magnificent buildings, as well as numerous parks that were built during this period which has given Veli Losinj its nickname the "Garden City". Even today, it is worth it to walk along the wonderfully fragrant gardens of the city.
