The mountainous island of Cres is the second largest island in the Adriatic after the neighboring island of Krk. Long and narrow, Cres stretches southward through the northern part of the Kvarner Bay. Its picturesque mountain ranges, with the highest peak Gorice at 648 meters above sea level, define the landscape. The island offers around 248 kilometers of coastline with numerous idyllic pebble beaches perfect for swimming. A unique feature is the freshwater lake Vrana, which serves as a drinking water reservoir and is only partially accessible. The largest town is Cres Town with about 2,200 inhabitants.

Towns and Attractions

Cres Town is car-free and full of architectural highlights, including churches, monasteries, two 16th-century city gates, and an art museum. Valun, at the southern end of Cres Bay, is a small spa town and famous as a filming location of the series "Der Sonne entgegen". Lubenice, 378 meters above sea level, offers stunning views of Sv. Ivan Bay, home to one of Croatia's most beautiful beaches. Quiet holiday spots include Miholascica and Martinscica, both with beautiful beaches.

Arrival to Cres

Cres can be reached via the island of Krk by ferry from Merag to Valbiska or from Istria via Brestova to Porozina. Cres Town is car-free and accessible via main road No. 100. At Osor, a swing bridge connects Cres with the neighboring island of Losinj. Cres has two important Jadrolinija ferry connections: Merag (Cres) – Valbiska (Krk) and Porozina (Cres) – Brestova (Istria). The ferry to Krk takes about 25 minutes and allows quick access to Rijeka International Airport or the mainland. In the off-season, 12 ferries operate daily; in the peak season, 13. A passenger ferry by Krilo connects Cres and Mali Losinj daily with other islands and the mainland. Seasonal connections to Zadar and Losinj–Venice by Venezia Lines are also available.
