Dugi Otok – Vacation Rentals in Untouched Nature
Dugi Otok, the "long island," is a true natural paradise, perfect for those seeking peace, relaxation, and seclusion. The island is approximately 43 km long and up to 5 km wide, offering secluded bays, crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches, Mediterranean landscapes, and a dramatic western cliff coastline. The Telascica Nature Park in the south is home to rare flora and fauna, which can be explored on scenic hikes. The fascinating salt lake Mir is ideal for swimming.
Island of beautiful, untouched beaches
Most beaches on Dugi Otok are rocky, but there are also beautiful sand and pebble beaches. Outside towns, these are natural beaches, so sunshades and supplies should be brought along. Town beaches often feature concrete platforms over the sea. In the north, the impressive bright yellow Veli Rat Lighthouse stands beside one of the island's most beautiful beaches. Veli Rat has a modern marina with 110 berths and excellent infrastructure. Nearby villages include Verunic and Polje with several pebble beaches. Uvala Sakarun offers a sandy shallow beach perfect for families and is connected to the Bozava hotel complex by a tourist train.
Bozava and the main town Sali are the only well-developed tourist spots on Dugi Otok. Additional beautiful beaches are found at Uvala Dumboka and Uvala Ripisce. Numerous apartments, studios, and vacation homes are available here, offering comfort amid nature.
Ideal for divers, sailors, and individual travelers
Sali in the south connects to Zadar by passenger ferry. The three-day Saljske uzance festival is celebrated annually. Car travelers use the ferry to Brbinj; other ports are in Zaglav and Bozava. Sailors can choose between modern harbors or secluded small ports. Main harbors for leisure boaters are Zaglav, Sali, and Bozava, all with shops and restaurants. Zaglav has the only fuel station. Smaller ports like Dragove, Luka, Savar, Soline, Verunic, Veli Rat, Zman, and Zverinac offer minimal facilities but complete seclusion.
For a Robinson-style vacation, rent a holiday home on the small island Krknata near Sali or on Lavdara – perfect for escaping the crowds.
Getting to Dugi Otok
Dugi Otok is connected to Zadar by multiple ferry lines. Jadrolinija Line 434 operates three times daily between late May and September between Zadar and Brbinj, with an additional Saturday evening crossing. The trip takes about 1 hour 20 minutes with beautiful views of the archipelago.
G&V boats offer faster connections: the Anamarija (Line 405a) runs once daily Monday–Saturday to Sali (1h10) and Zaglav (1h30). The high-speed Melita reaches Zadar-Sali in 50 minutes, Zadar-Zaglav in 1h05. Recommended for visitors without cars or those heading quickly to the southern part of the island.
