Vela Luka
A picturesquely located town in the far west of Korcula
To the west of the island of Korcula, nestled in a deeply indented, picturesque natural harbor, is the town of Vela Luka (big harbor)- the second largest town on the island with almost 5000 inhabitants. A car ferry regularly runs from Split to Vela Luka. The neighboring island of Lastovo is also within reach from here. The bay, together with the islets, provide many sheltered docking places for sailors. In the marina, which is open year round, only up to 40 boats can find a berth here, which has not, however, hurt the nautical tourism in Vela Luka. The sailing regatta is a nautical spectacle which is annually held on June 24 and entertains not only the tourists and the locals, but also traditionally rings in the summer season. The fishing nights, folklore and music events, exhibitions and singing evenings similarly make sure that there is enough versatile entertainment in Vela Luka.
Small tour around the city
If you want to enjoy the cultural and historic features of this harbor town, a tour through the city center is highly recommended. Here you will see the parish church of Sveti Josip (Saint Joseph), which was built in 1848 because the former parish church of Saint Vincenca was too small. The bell tower of the church of Saint Joseph was built to be almost completely detached from the church. From here you can drift through the busy streets and make your way to the cultural center of Vela Luka. This cultural center houses the old, Franulovic Repak Palace where you can visit museums, exhibitions and galleries that all provide an interesting insight into the history, art and culture of the town. Here you will find some of the most important and beautiful works of art, paintings and sculptures by regional artists. This Renaissance palace once belonged to the Ismaeli family and served as a small fortress. After touring the building, you should make sure to not miss the courtyard. The courtyard is adorned with elaborate mosaics and offers a quiet atmosphere close to the lively waterfront, with its cafés, bars and restaurants.
Products of Vela Luka that you should´t miss
Those who have more on their mind than just the local fish and shellfish dishes, will soon discover the partisan monument near the shore. You will find it standing in the middle of the palm trees lining the nearly 1.5 km long promenade. The culinary diversity of this town consists of not only fresh fish dishes, but also specialties made from figs and citrus fruits as well as wines and olives- olives being one of the most important crops in Vela Luka. Vela Luka has, compared to the other towns on the island of Korcula, a very well-developed system for the cultivation and processing of olives. It is definitely worthwhile to try a taste at one of the local restaurants, as well as to read about the history of olive processing at the museum.
The Great Cave, Recreation and Sports in Vela Luka
North of the village you will find the hillside cave of Vela spilja (Great Grotto), which was inhabited more than 20,000 years ago. Archaeological finds, such as ceramic pieces, are witnesses to the early settlement of the region. The most important relics of the former Stone Age can be seen in the cultural center of Vela Luka. The cave can be visited during the summer time. During the peak season, many visitors are drawn to the beautiful beaches and hidden coves that are located along the heavily indented coastline here. This is where you will find great diving and snorkeling spots and good conditions for surfing and sailing. Vacationers can also get their sports in by hiking and cycling through the vineyards and olive groves. In the village there are sport areas and playgrounds, which can be used to play football, basketball and volleyball.-
