Veli Rat
Veli Rat is located in the northernmost part of the island of Dugi Otok, which is upstream from the known coastal town of Zadar and is located in Northern Dalmatia. From all the other surrounding islands, Dugi Otok is the closest lying island to Italy. Veli Rat is primarily a place that is surrounded by unspoilt nature and is home to one of the island's most popular beaches - the sandy Sakarun Beach. Additionally, located northwest of the town of Veli Rat, lies the famous lighthouse of Dugi Otok which is named Punta Bjanca. Built in 1849, this 42 meter high lighthouse is located 3 km outside of the town and now serves inter alia, as a holiday home. According to oral tradition, its yellow exterior gets its color from 100,000 egg yolks. The chapel of St. Nicholas, which can be found in the lighthouse's courtyard, is a popular place for weddings. Boat owners and sailors are particularly thrilled to make Veli Rat and its newly built marina a stopover on their tours of the coast. Shops are located in the village. Around the small village there are idyllic routes for biking and hiking.
In the areas around the lighthouse of Veli Rat there are many idyllic pebbled and rocky beaches, some with sandy sea-bottoms and some with azure-blue to turquoise shimmering waters. Far to the north of the peninsula of Veli Rat is the popular anchoring spot, the Bay of Most (meaning bridge). Here there is a narrow gravel strip that connects the northernmost, overgrown with pine trees peninsula to the rest of the island.
