Baška
Baska is a small town with many facets, which can be seen, among other things, in its traditional events as well as in its architectural cityscape. The historic old town of Baska is characterized by cobbled streets, close-standing stone houses and a small harbor where local fishermen's boats are protected from the strong Bora wind that blows from the mainland over the island of Krk. In the center there are two of the most visit-worthy, important churches of Baska: The parish church of Sveti Trojice (1722), a three-nave Baroque church (the largest in the town) and the church of Saint John the Baptist, the former parish church of Baska. With its yellow bell tower, the church of St. John the Baptist can already be spotted from a distance. In it rings the oldest bell of Baska dating back to 1431. The present parish church, also called Church of the Holy Trinity, houses in addition to eight altars, valuable paintings from the painter Frano Juric and the Venetian Paulo Camps, as well as a silver crucifix - a gift from the Frankopan princes of the island of Krk. Of great historical importance is the Baska Tablet, one of the oldest preservations of Glagolitic inscriptions. It was originally discovered amongst the other tablets from the year 1100 in the valley of Baska near the neighboring town of Jurandvor. To commemorate the importance of the tablets, a memorial has been set up at the location where they were found as well as a corresponding path of stone sculptures, which runs down to the harbor of Baska. The path takes you not only on a trip through the history of the location, but also by beautiful landscapes in Baska and the southern part of the island of Krk.
Baska offers an eclectic, vibrant culture of traditional events such as the fishing festival, the Big Guitar Festival, the Folk Art Festival and Crna Ovca. The latter festival is translated as meaning "the black sheep" and includes athletic highlights such as a regatta, hiking and cycling tours as well as lectures, theater performances and folk dances. In contrast to its gloomy name the festival celebrates everything that creates spring: scents, sports, landscapes and enjoyment. The event is called "Black Sheep" only because the black sheep is generally characterized as an individual who stands out in a crowd, just like the festival. Among the culinary specialties of the festival there are sheep dishes, which are prepared through different traditional cooking methods. These events and many other features of Baska are very popular among the visitors. Especially the 2 km long fine pebbled beach which is one of the most popular beaches on the Krk island. In addition, there are also varied and wild beaches around Baska, which not only invite guests to sunbathe, but also attract boaters, divers and water sports enthusiasts. East of the small town, there are many particularly small bays lined with wild beaches that promise peace.
