Krk Island
The island of Krk in Croatia, with an area of 405.78 km ², is the largest island in the Adriatic Sea. Krk is the ideal place to spend a relaxing family holiday. Its idyllic pebble beaches invite tourists for a swim and the inland of the island is excellent for hiking and cycling. In addition, the island offers excellent cultural and sport-related activities so that even the most adventurous guests will be guaranteed to not get bored on their holidays.
Connected to the Mainland Through a Bridge
To get to the popular holiday island, visitors do not need a ferry. Since 1980, Krk has been connected to the mainland by the bridge, Krcki, which is one kilometer long. The use of the bridge by car comes at a cost, but those who want to cross by bike or on foot, need pay nothing. Krk is also connected with many important destinations in Europe by the Rijeka airport which lies south of the city of Rijeka, in the vicinity of the resort Omisalj.
The Mild Climate Invites Tourists for a Swim
The water temperatures in June average out at about 24 ° C - ideal conditions for spending a wonderful holiday on this island's idyllic pebble beaches. Or, if you prefer to spend your holidays doing sports, there are numerous possibilities for water sports activities, for example, wakeboarding in the Cable Krk Center in Kornic in Punat, jet skiing, diving, sailing, which you can all do to your heart's content. The island of Krk has a lot to offer climbers to: The climbing facilities of Portafortuna and Bunculuka in Baska are suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. There is also an extensive network of trails running through the whole island, so that hikers and cyclists can also make the most of their vacation. There are 19 different walking routes to the popular town of Baska, which have a total length of approximately 80 kilometers.
Numerous Attractions on Krk island
Krk Town is the capital of the island as well as its cultural center. Every summer, numerous outdoor concerts and jazz festivals take place here. In the town of Krk there is also the very popular Drazica beach, which is especially attractive to families with children. The small town of Punat located in the Puntarska Draga Bay is said to be a paradise for sailors because of its picturesque landscapes. Wonderful sandy beaches can be found in Silo as well as the pretty beach located directly in the center of Pecine. Omisalj in the northwest of the island is just waiting for a visit and its old town boasts a fascinating church, the Church of Assumption, dating back to the 12th century. In the resort town of Baska is the Baska Tablet, which is one of the oldest monuments in the Croatian language. Between the towns of Porat and Malinska there is a newly created trail that runs directly along the sea. The route between Njivice and Malinska is highly recommended and has even been dubbed "The Paradise Trail". Stara Baska is located in the south of the island and has some of the most beautiful Croatian beaches to offer, some of which can be reached only by boat. In the east, the enchanting city of Vrbnik offers numerous bathing spots right next to a picturesque, historic town center. Particularly interesting are the many churches and chapels from different eras.
How to get there
The popular holiday island of Krk is one of the few that can be reached in a variety of ways. The island not only has an airport (Rijeka International Airport) but also has an arched toll bridge that connects the island to the coastal highway of Jadranska magistrala (Adriatic Highway). A ferry route to the mainland no longer exists thanks to the bridge, but there is the possibility to take several ferries from the Valbiska harbor in Krk to other Croatian island destinations. The car ferry service from the Jadrolinija ship company, which operates most of the Croatian ferries, connects Krk to the ferry port of Merag on the island of Cres. The trip is relatively short at around 25 minutes, but still provides beautiful views of the magical islands of the Kvarner Bay. In the less busy season during May/June and September, the ferry operates 12 times daily, and in the high season between late June and late August, it runs up to 13 times a day with sometimes varied times. Between Valbiska and Lopar on the island of Rab the ship company LNP runs a catamaran. Throughout the whole year, two ferries run daily in the direction of Rab. The 1 ½ hour long crossing gives visitors traveling without a car, the ability to breathe a little and enjoy the ride through the Kvarner Bay. Note: Departure times vary with the season and Sundays you must take notice of the different schedules in comparison to Monday through Saturday. Throughout the year, there is the additional car ferry route number 338 that transports daily visitors and vehicles in 1 hour 45 minutes and around 2 hours between Rab and Krk and back. The boats run twice per day during low season and four times a day during the peak season between late May and late September.-
