Povlja

Original country charm emits from the stone houses of the locals, that have largely remained intact. Only a few new buildings are to be found in the village. In the center of the small village community is the Church of St. John the Baptist. This parish church was built on the foundations of a three-aisled basilica from early Christian times. In the earlier church, there was once the remains of its namesake: John Povalski. On a tour of Povlja, you will also discover a basilica from the 6th century- an octagonal baptistery, whose construction is unique in Croatia.

Along the promenade there are good taverns, fish restaurants and pubs, which serve, in particular, Dalmatian cuisine. In the small harbor bay one can see the rugged mountains of the Croatian mainland which rise around Split between the rocking fishing boats. With a little luck you can also see the imposing wooden ships that were built in the traditional island style and now are used to take tourists on excursions around Brac.
