Stari Grad

Near the small fishing harbor, you can still feel the spirit of the original Stari Grad, which was founded in 384 BC by the Greeks. Overlooking the sea, the small stone houses are strung closely together, where between them interesting sights begin to appear, again and again, that tell of its golden age in the 16th century. For example, the bustling piazzas and the Tvrdalj Castle that emerged from this period. A courtyard, garden and a small ethnographic collection lure you in to visit the former fortified castle. The castle's builder, Petar Hektorovic, found joy in both high society as well as to the simple fishermen and farmers.

An archaeological museum located in the Dominican monastery tells the visitors about the city's history that goes back even further than the 16th century. The Baroque Church of Sveti Stjepan (Saint Stephen) built in 1605 is enclosed by the main Piazza. The adjacent bell tower was built with the stones from the previous cyclopean wall. The lively old town around the harbor is the vibrant center. Here, especially during the summer months, many festivals with traditional, cultural and musical performances take place and everyone is welcome.
