Trogir
Historical Cultural Heritage on the Adriatic
With the old city's unique island setting, invaluable heritage and gorgeous Mediterranean charm, Trogir, a city with 3,100 inhabitants is a major port city on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Trogir's indescribable flair has a lot to owe to its location between historic and architecturally impressive buildings, its cultural practices and modern ambiance. Trogir is situated between Split and Sibenik in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia. There is an airport very close to Trogir making it easily accessible.
Trogir's Unique Cityscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
This port city from a cultural history and architectural point of view is a true gem and a visit to this city on the Adriatic is a welcome change from the relaxing beach holidays spent at one of the many surrounding beautiful sandy beaches. Its exclusive charm is due to the insular nature of the historic center of the old city core. The city, however has not lost its connections to its surroundings. The old city center can be reached via the bridge linking the mainland to the island of Ciovo. In 1997 the whole old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes landmarks such as the Kamerlengo, the bell tower church St. Sebastian and the Church of St. Peter. A good starting point for a tour of the city is at John Paul II square, which encompasses the City Loggia, the St. Ćipiko Palace from the 15th century as well as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. Going along the shore towards the west you will encounter the Sea Gate and the church and monastery of St. Dominik.
Enjoy the Historical Ambiance
With over 2,500 years of urban history Trogir has lived through the influences of rulers such as the Romans, Greeks and Venetians. The legacy its history has left behind can be seen in its palaces, churches and other buildings. Some remnants can be seen in the Cairo collection which can be marveled at in the Benedictine monastery and includes artifacts from several eras. Venetian heritage is particularly obvious in the city loggia, which started being built in 1308, but whose construction was stopped by the Venetians in the 15th century. The formative Trogir image owes its look to the Romans, who separated the center from the mainland and thus paved the way for making it a Unseco World Heritage Site. Roman heritage is, therefore, felt throughout the old town: from in the small streets up to near the waterfront. In the evening you should take the opportunity to walk through the winding streets, listen to music festivals with classical and folk music or take in the delights of the traditional taverns' local kitchen. The food consists of fresh fish that comes from traditional fishing, wine that is locally grown and a sweet dessert, like "rafioli" for which Trogir is known for. Later, you can go to one of the bars, taverns or pubs to enjoy the evening and enjoy the historic ambiance. An exciting nightlife can also be found in the nightclubs of Trogir, Ciovo Island, and in Split.
Attractions near Trogir
The proximity of Split to its neighboring Dalmatian metropolis makes it a good holiday destination spot. The island of Ciovo is also a popular destination spot in the summer. Besides Split, other cities to visit while on holiday in Croatia, among others, are Sibenik and Primosten. A must for when the sun is shining is an excursion into nature, such as to the National Park Krka or the Kornati National Park.
