Riviera Neretva

The Neretva is a major river of Herzegovina and the lifeline of the entire region. Only 22 km of the river run through Croatia, but here is where a delta of breathtaking beauty and fertility forms. In the mild climate oranges, tangerines, lemons, kiwis and other sun-addicted fruit thrive. This is why the Neretva Delta is also often described as "Croatian California". The delta extends from Metkovic up directly behind Ploce, the biggest port on the Dalmatian coast. A total of 12 tributaries run through the lush, extremely fertile and partly swampy area. Here you can only admire the outstanding natural beauty, but also the huge orchards from Croatian fruit growers. In addition, the Neretva Delta is a haven for many animals, especially for water birds making a rest on their way to or from Africa.

Attractions in the Neretva-Valley

Near the city of Metkovic, in the village of Vid, there are the ruins of the ancient Narona. The former Roman trading town was destroyed in the early Middle Ages. Today visitors can experience much of the ancient city and the life of its inhabitants in the Archaeological Museum in Vid. Mostar, the largest city of Herzegovina, is also worth a visit. The landmark of the city is the Old Bridge Stari most, which was built in the 16th century. It was almost completely destroyed during the Bosnian war, but has been luckily successfully restored through extensive restoration work. The Old Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Under no circumstances should you miss the annual, spectacular rowing competition with traditional old wooden boats on the Neretva. The Bacina lakes near Ploce are a stunning natural landscape ideal for hiking and also allows for fishing. The lake scenery covers an area of 138 hectares. Six of the seven lakes are interconnected.

Sites and leisure activities

The Neretva Delta is perfect for fishing and for the pursuit of water sports. Kite-boarding is in particular very popular here, but the beauty of the landscape, however, can be best admired through a boat tour. Especially suitable for kite-boarding is the small town of Ploce Komin. The Mediterranean way of life can be excellently enjoyed in the small town Komarna. The beautiful pebble beaches offer a wonderful place to relax and bathe and the restaurants offer a chance to taste delicious local seafood specialties, fresh fish and fine wines.

The village is located about three kilometers away from Klek. The small coastal town Klek hugs the bay of Neum and here guests will find wide pebble beaches, children's playgrounds, tennis courts, great shopping and restaurants. Above the village lie the ruins of the ancient city of Smrdan, likely a fortress from the Venetian period. The small village Duboka on the bay is a haven for peace. The perfect place for fishing enthusiasts, nature lovers and lovers of good food is Blace, a village at the mouth of the river Neretva. Blace is located near Ploce. The charming, small town of Opuzen is located slightly inland and entices visitors with its interesting, annual film festival.
